AM Series

The World Health Organization defines “good health” as a dynamic balance involving physical, mental, and social well-being. This series explores the intersection of technological innovation and health care, examining how research breakthroughs can improve our daily lives, whether it’s related to monitoring our physical health, or developing techniques to improve memory and hence mental and emotional well-being. Advances in nanomedicine are enabling a more targeted treatment for certain conditions, and a global pandemic reignited interest in vaccines for zoonotic diseases such as Lyme, while researchers continue to grapple with the challenge of antimicrobial resistant bacteria.
Developing a variety of tools for building and maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being is a good strategy for healthy aging. We begin this series by looking at the dynamic balance between Indigenous ways of knowing and Western medicine which is fundamental to the Two-Eyed Seeing approach to promoting Indigenous health equity. We conclude with a big-picture look at human potential from a physician who contributed a great deal to medical research and then literally reached for the stars.
PM Series

The Paradox of Renewable Energy: Decarbonization in the Age of Disruption Electrification has become an indispensable part of decarbonizing the Earth system, but the technologies that are used to reduce global emissions (including energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and – less commonly – mass transit solutions) are themselves highly dependent on destructive forms of mining and resource extraction that have significant social, economic, and ecological consequences. This is the paradox of renewable energy: as the green energy transitiongathers pace, so too does its material and ecological footprint. Drawing on five years of empirical research, Dr. Johnson explores the conflicts and trade-offs that are currently reshaping the global political economy of lithium extraction in five of the world’s largest lithium-bearing frontiers: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, and Chile. With funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), he seeks to foster a broader public understanding of energy security, resource nationalism, and the politics of miningfor a green and sustainable energy transition.
